If you’ve ever read “My Purpose” you know why I strive to be frugal, but in a nutshell these past 2 years we’ve been trying to be careful with our money so we could afford Cameron’s schooling on our road to becoming foreign missionaries. Now Cameron has finished school, we’re debt free and will be starting our missionary training in August! :)

I love hearing why people choose to be frugal, so what’s your reason? I’d LOVE to hear your purpose in the comments!

  1. We are frugal so that I can continue to stay home with my girls and school them. It also allows us to spend money on things that are more important to us like giving, travel, sports, college and our dream “land”.
Great job on being able to remain debt free through it all! Being debt free really changes your life.

  2. We are being frugal so that I can stay home with the boys and so we can pay off credit card debt. If I had one piece of advice for young couples it would be to never get a credit card!

  3. We started out being frugal to pay off debt. As a result of that we have been able to join staff at a church plant. Our salary has been graciously paid this first year, but we are raising support for our second year. We would not have been able to do this had we not gotten out of debt. Now I am continuously inspired to remain frugal so that we can follow God’s calling in our lives, unhindered by financial challenges! Thank you for providing inspiration for us along your family’s journey!

  4. I started being real frugal when I moved out on my own. One for spare money incase of emergencies and 2– I really didn’ t have money to afford things my kids needed if I wouldn’t have. But mainly because I pretty well lived on my Grandparents farm and they reused all they could. Probably because they lived thru the Depression. I’ve always said I was born in the wrong generation. I”m a tightwad and am proud of it. I save and reuse all I can. My kids have said I”m a packrat, but when they need things or for the grandkids school projects for example…guess where they go? Same as what I did–go to Grandma’s house :) Plus thanks to being that way I paid off 2 loans early because I had the extra money to make a bit of a bigger payment to pay our house off early.

  5. We are learning to be frugal for the same reason you are! We are hoping that we will be able to have my husband attend a missionary school a year from this September. We sold our house and moved into a VERY small apartment. What school are you going to?

  6. My husband has been accepted to the Center For Pioneer Church Planting with To Every Tribe. It is in southern Texas near Brownsville. We have four children ages 2-almost 10. I would love to live in a camper trailer, but homeschooling our bunch in such a small space, in the middle of our cold Montana winter sounds pretty difficult. Our kids are on board with our plans but it was really hard for them to say good-bye to our house and yard. It is so neat to see them realize the freedom of sacrificing for something better. Jesus is worth it!!

    • That’s great! I’ve heard of Pioneer. If you have a prayer letter, I’d love to recieve it! You can send it to purposelyfrugal(at)hotmail(dot)com

  7. We are frugal so that I can stay home with our girls, and so that we can pay off debt. Also, we are committed to making sure that our kids travel and see our country during each summer. Being frugal, making my own laundry soap, eating home at every meal, averaging 5-7 meals out per year (special occasions only), and strategic grocery shopping and meal planning allow us to do the things that are important to us.
