I’m living in a community surrounded by frugal people! I guess when you’re a full-time student paying for classes you become frugal whether you enjoy it or not! In fact, I feel un-frugal compared to some of these people. Just to give you an idea here’s some of the things I’ve noticed in just the short time that we’ve been here:

I went to wash my hands at one couple’s house and their liquid hand soap was watered down.

At the same home we were served delicious spaghetti and meat sauce. She said the sauce was made from tomatoes from her garden, plus tomatoes she got free and it had venison in it.

I overheard 2 ladies talking about how they hate throwing away plastic disposable cups and usually end up washing them out for another use.

When I went to the laundry room, I noticed what looked like a couple of jars of home-made detergent among the bottles of store bought.

Speaking of laundry they even have some washing machines labelled specifically for cloth diapers.

A friend told me when boxes of browning bananas were donated, she borrowed a dehydrator and made a bunch of banana chips.

The same friend has some homemade decorations in her house, even one made with toilet paper tubes…and it’s really cute!

Can’t wait to learn more from all these fantastic frugalistas (and frugalistos)!

  1. Wonderful ideas, I would love to see what art was made from toilet paper rolls. I live in a college community, and it’s getting better, but they are generally the most wasteful people I’ve met. AT the end of a semester they toss everything out before going home. Out goes computers, couches, storage containers and so much more. It’s a race with the townspeople to get to the prizes first to save them from being picked up on garbage day.

  2. I LOVE my homemade laundry soap! If you haven’t tried it you should. I really feel like my clothes get cleaner than they do with store bought soap.

  3. Doesn’t it feel good to be amongst other frugalites?

The watered-down hand soap thing, when visiting with my friend’s parents they’ve admitted to buying gallon jugs of hand soap and only using 2-3 tablespoons (depending on brand/strength) in a foaming pump dispenser and filling it up with water. Can you imagine thats all it needs to make up an effective and luxurious feeling foam handsoap?!

  4. It also works to fill your foaming hand soap pump with water, and then a quick squirt of antibacterial dish soap. Foamy, and pennies per bottle!
