These last to years I’ve had 2 goals in making Gracia’s birthday cakes. I wanted them to be:

1. Fairly easy.

2. Not require any fancy cake molds I’d have to buy. For some people purchasing a nice mold that they can re-use might be worth it, but for me, who rarely makes cakes, I didn’t want to spend the money on it.

Last year's butterfly cake

Last year we made a butterfly cake. This year we did 2 ladybug cakes, which was much easier than the butterfly one, since it didn’t require any cutting!

The picture is pretty self explanatory, but I’ll explain anyways. :) I made a chocolate wacky cake and simply divided the batter in 2 round pans, and made 2 cakes. You could also stack them with icing between to make one double layer cake.

Using store bought icing I made red and pink icing and a little bit of black icing. After icing the cakes I had Cameron pipe the black on to outline the head, wings and mouth. I had him do it, that way if it got messed up it wasn’t my fault. :) We used the old ziploc-bag-with-the-corner-cut trick for the piping. Then we used whoppers for the eyes and Oreos for the dots. We just used one side of the Oreo and took the icing off.

Since I didn’t have any cake-holder I just put big plastic bowls over the cakes to keep them from getting dried out.

This cake was simple enough that I would do it again and thank you pinterest for your inspiration!
